A dynamic one-day conference that provides up-to-date and accurate information on advances in HIV prevention, care and treatment. The conference offers critical educational and networking opportunities for individuals living with HIV and for service providers. Presentations include both consumer voices and service providers from some of Oregon's top medical and care facilities.

Medical update for consumers: Melissa Murphy, MD
A presentation of the newest antiretroviral drug classes: CCR5 inhibitors and integrase inhibitors. Points of discussion will include how the new antiretroviral drugs work, how well they control HIV replication, side effects, and the controversy surrounding the appropriate time to initiate antiretroviral therapy. -
Medical update for providers: Mary O’Hearn, MD
An update on recent changes to the DHHS recommendations for initiation and initial treatment with ARV therapy will be addressed for HIV providers and support staff. A review of the latest demographics for HIV in the United States will be offered as well as MMWR recommendations in prophylaxis and health maintenance. The presentation will further include information on the risks of non-HIV related complications including risk for CAD, bone loss, liver disease and cancer.

Women, HIV, and Self-Worth: A Panel facilitated by Maria Kosmetatos, NP
The panel will address issues of self worth and its effects on HIV risk, relationships, and self-care in regards to women. The discussion will also communicate ways that HIV communities can help address these issues. -
Naturopathic Medicine and HIV: Angie Rademacher, ND, LAc
A discussion that will define Naturopathic Medicine by exploring its five principles and identifying how they relate to HIV. The application of Naturopathic Medicine in HIV treatment will be addressed as well as the management of common side effects of antiretroviral medications, wellness promotion, and an integrative and collaborative approach to healthcare. -
The Evolving Management of HIV/HCV Coinfection: Doug Beers, MD
A look at new options available for Hepatitis C therapy and how to select the right time to treat Hepatitis C. The discussion will also address ways to maintain a healthy liver and improve treatment response with general health care. -
The Cognitive Challenges of Living with HIV/AIDS: Kristy Fleming, MOTR/L
A discussion on the cognitive challenges associated with HIV/AIDS and how those obstacles affect daily life. The discussion will also provide strategies to assist those with cognitive challenges.

Living and Growing Older with HIV: Lisa Capaldini, MD
This presentation will address new HIV medications, new treatment guidelines, and recurrent controversies. The (new) 2009 OHSS guidelines will be reviewed and analyzed.

New Insights into Nutrition Therapy for People Living with HIV: JoAnne Maurice, MS, RD, LD/CD
An evaluation of the relationship between nutrition and HIV that will include recommendations for weight management (both weight gain and loss) and meal suggestions to increase efficacy of HIV medications. The presentation will review nutrition recommendations for co-morbid conditions and nutrition recommendations as they may apply to special groups. -
HIV and Social Security Disability: Sarah Patterson, Attorney at Law, LLC
An in-depth view of Social Security Disability regarding people with HIV/AIDS. This presentation will include essential terminology, how to distinguish Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income, and notable SSA processing improvements. -
Fertility Issues/Family Planning: Paula Amato, MD
A review of the risks of horizontal and vertical HIV transmission as well as methods of risk reduction will be presented. An in-depth look will be taken into the United States’ experience of providing fertility services to HIV-seropositive individuals and the fertility options for men and women seropositive for HIV. -
Managing Depression and Anxiety: Lusijah Marx RN, PMHNP, Psy.D and Shad Alexander, MS
This workshop will identify forms of anxiety and depression stemming from HIV diagnosis including trauma, stigma, impaired self-image, and fears about one’s health. The presentation will examine concepts and skills in management of depression and anxiety that will support health and a sense of well-being within people infected with HIV.

Speakers’ Panel; Area of focus this year: Stigma, facilitated by Toni Kempner, RN, BSN, CCRC, ACRN
This panel discussion will assess the power of stigma and its impact on the ability of persons with HIV to access health care. The concept of disclosure will addressed along and evaluation of the relationship between stigma and mental health, immigration, privacy, and discrimination.
