To offer folks another opportunity to view it — I’ve included a link to it here. As you can see from the report, after the immense challenges and changes posed by the Great Recession, CAP’s 2009/10 fiscal year was defined by stability, improved efficiencies, and growth. At the same time that we brought our administrative and fundraising expenditures to a new low of 19.6% of expenses, we expanded programs to serve more people. Within our housing program we served 699 people, an increase of more than 40%, and our HIV counseling & testing services were expanded by 35%, while prevention and education continued to reach thousands.

Beyond the overview letter provided by me in the report, you will find information on program highlights, progress on CAP’s seven strategic priorities, and a listing of all staff and board members. In addition, within the “By the Numbers” section you will find a quick overview of program statistics, as well as details on our financials. For more recent news on events and happenings at CAP, please read on through this e-news.

The event takes place on April 30, 2011 and begins with cocktails at 6PM, followed by a 3-course meal and 15-piece live auction. Immediately after, Patrons are invited to merge their party with the Grand Event and silent auction on the concourse of the Coliseum.

In all, 290 pieces of art will be up for bid to the an estimated 1,500 attendees. You won’t want to miss this exciting opportunity to support CAP in the fight against HIV and AIDS, to buy some spectacular art offered by many local artists, and network with new and old friends.

CAP’s +alk program has served over two hundred men and women living with HIV since its debut in 2006. +alk is a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-approved HIV prevention intervention for HIV+ individuals focused on reducing stress around disclosure of HIV status to friends, family members and sex partners and teaching skills around risk reduction and negotiation of safer sex.

In 2006 CAP was selected as one of seven organizations across the country to participate in the CDC’s first-ever Community-based Organization Behavioral Outcomes Project (CBOP). Between 2006 and 2008, 105 people living with HIV who participated in +alk were also enrolled in CBOP. CBOP collected information regarding an individual’s medical status and sex and drug risk behaviors to assess whether +alk was effective in reducing high risk behaviors and the potential for HIV transmission. Data regarding risk behaviors was collected from program participants prior to first participating in +alk, then again at 90 days and 180 days following the conclusion of +alk.

Recently released results from CBOP showed that participant risk behavior (such as instances of unprotected sex, sex while intoxicated or high on drugs, and total number of sex partners) declined following the intervention at 90-day and 180-day follow-ups. Nationally, other CBOs reported similar declines, although CAP’s was particularly noteworthy because our participants as a group showed a higher decline in high risk behaviors.

Based on its initial success with CBOP, CAP was pleased to be selected as one of four sites nationwide for a follow-up outcome monitoring project with the new HIV prevention program, Axis (based on the evidence-based intervention, RESPECT). The Community-based Organization Monitoring & Evaluation Project (CMEP) will seek to enroll 400 individuals participating in Axis over the next five years to track the effectiveness of this intervention and allow us to make even further enhancements to the quality of HIV prevention services we provide. Outcome monitoring projects such as this prove useful in assessing the overall effectiveness of our HIV prevention programming, ensuring that limited resources are targeted effectively and reach those at highest risk.

The results of a 10-year, primarily North American comprehensive study called Acute Infection and Early Disease Research Program found that women with HIV developed worse outcomes than men with HIV, even though both groups had comparable clinical parameters when they enrolled in the study. The findings of the study revealed unsettling figures: nonwhite men and women were less likely to initiate antiretroviral therapy (ART) at any time than white men; patients living in the U.S. South were less likely to initiate ART than those living in other regions of the country; and women were more likely to experience at least one HIV/AIDS-related illness, with nonwhite women the most likely compared to men. These findings caused the researchers to conclude that in order to improve the health outcome of HIV-infected individuals, socioeconomic factors must be considered and changed. The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says, “Paramount among these is the influence of socioeconomic factors that often determine access to health care as well as contribute in a negative way to a lifestyle detrimental to optimal health outcomes in the acquisition and treatment of a number of diseases, including HIV infection.”

A recent study conducted by the Pew Internet Project on Internet usage found that online searches on health information were the third most common activity of U.S. Internet users. The two most common online activities were exchanging emails and using search engines. According to the study, eight out of ten users reported that they went online for health information. The study found that many people conduct health information searches before and after seeking care from medical personnel. Yahoo reported that ‘pregnancy,’ ‘herpes’ and ‘STD’ (sexually transmitted disease) were among the top five most commonly searched terms on the mobile version of their site. Although it seems that many more people are using the Internet for health information, the study found that, “fewer than half of adults in the following groups use the Internet for health care information: African Americans, Latinos, people age 65 and older, disabled persons, and those living in households with an annual income below $30,000.” This discrepancy may be explained by a lack of access to the Internet or to mobile devices with online capabilities; the study mentioned this might change with more African Americans and Latinos accessing information from their smart phones.

On July 8th and July 9th, 10,000 bicyclists accepted the challenge of riding the 200 miles between Seattle and Portland. The Annual Seattle to Portland (STP) ride, sponsored by Group Health Seattle, provides an excellent opportunity to promote wellness, to support the organizers at the Cascade Bicycle Club, and for 3,000 teams to raise money or interest for a cause. Cascade AIDS Project, with a team of seven in this first, “test” year, accepted the challenge to raise awareness and funding to support the mission of CAP. We are happy to report, all seven completed the ride — two of whom made it in one day!

In total, the team raised over $3,500. Benjamin Gerritz said, “There were so many people it was overwhelming! I got to know so many people, and I will bet you we will have over 100 riders in 2012!” Because Portland is such a bike-friendly city, we believe we can meet and beat Benjamin’s suggestion. CAP will gear up for 2012 with a small planning committee scheduled to start meeting in September. If you would like to ride or to join the planning committee, please contact us at www.ride4cap.org or contact Eric Shaffer at 503.278.3851. You can also follow our progress on facebook.

“We are floored at the outpouring of support from this year’s walk,” said Michael Kaplan, Executive Director of Cascade AIDS Project. “CAP and its partners have been raising funds to fight HIV/AIDS for more 25 years now. Though the needs of those living with HIV/AIDS have evolved, the overall demand for our services are greater today than ever before. These funds will help us make a real difference as we seek to reduce wait lists for stable housing and expand HIV & STD testing services to meet a demand that continues to outpace available resources.”

“We are grateful to our supporters, walkers and sponsors,” said Michael Sorensen, CAP’s Director of Development. “We made sincere improvements in the walk and how folks can donate or participate. Integrating Facebook with our fundraising site and pushing hard on proven media strategies seems to have been the right strategy. Analytics suggest about 30% of our donors responded to a post on Facebook, while 50% visited our fundraising site by typing in the name of the site. This means Facebook works and that aidswalkportland.org has a presence in donors’ minds.”

Some 3,300 people registered to walk and another 7,000 showed their support by just showing up.

CAP administered a friendly competition, complete with prizes donated by a number of local and national businesses. Winners include:

pity the poor fool who messes with me.” After seeing how much money 11-year-old Alazar Manning’s A-Team raised for AIDS Walk 2011, you could say the same thing for competing teams. Not only did Alazar raise more money than any other youth, he raised more than all walkers regardless of age.

In 2009, his first year fundraising for AIDS Walk, Alazar raised $800. Last year, he boosted that number to $2,100. This year, he raised $9,050.

Alazar’s zeal for spreading the word about HIV and raising funds to support Cascade AIDS Project’s mission comes from his background. Alazar was born in Ethiopia and came to the United States five years ago. When he discovered HIV had affected his family, he began learning about the virus. Knowledge and compassion turned practical: he would raise money to prevent the further spread of HIV.

Alazar’s hard work will pay off as the funds he raised will be used for programs such as HIV testing and prevention education; help finding housing and jobs for low-income people living with HIV/AIDS; and programs such as Camp Starlight, a week-long, sleep-away camp for kids affected and infected by HIV/AIDS.

It will pay off in another way, too, since Alazar won AIDS Walk’s top fundraising prize: two tickets anywhere in the United States, a stay at any Kimpton hotel, two tickets to a Timbers game, and a Timbers-signed soccer ball.

To rally in the fight against AIDS, many AIDS Walk participants walk with a team — from work, around the memory of a lost loved one, or around a theme. This year, The Ultimate Alliance: Super Heroes for CAP was one such team — the winning team, having raised over $32,000 to help in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

We asked the team captain, Andrew Shayde (aka Night Crawler) what he did to rally his teammates and to come out on top. Here is what he shared:

“People love a theme. Much like a High School mascot, people love to have a title or concept to rally behind. A symbol is something people can cheer behind. Go HEROES!

Social Media was key in our success — Facebook and YouTube were our main means of staying connected and rallied. I developed a Facebook page and added participants. Team members discussed everything from costume ideas, fundraising collaborations, to carpools to the event. We used YouTube to make short videos about how to join our team and information about the event. I think this is the biggest tool that helped us get 132 team members. We posted it on the Facebook walls of friends and sent the link via email. The videos touch on the seriousness of the cause but also the lighthearted fun of the actual event. I thought it was important to share that The Walk is not a sullen candlelight vigil but an energetic walk with people cheering you on and the chance to make new connections.

Each week I sent out one email to the team on a Monday with a small weekly goal. It ranged anywhere from $5 to $33. These were small challenges teammates tried to attain by the following Friday. Sometimes the amount was meaningful like $33 representing the estimated 33 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. Sometimes the theme of the week was a team builder like ‘get a $5 donation toward a teammate’s goal.’ One week our goal was to get a friend registered, which made our numbers jump. The small goals seemed easily attainable as opposed to asking a more general ‘Everyone raise $1,000,’ which can seem too far out of reach for many. Most of our team were low-income first-time walkers, so $100 from their friends was never an option. We took baby steps, just LOTS of them.

And finally we had a few Happy Hours and pre-parties. The Happy Hours were at local places and just a fun chance for team-building. The more our team got to KNOW each other the more they wanted to WORK with each other.”
